Pictures and a wedding

I’m on my way to New Mexico to go to Laura and Benjy’s wedding which is on the 10th. Going two days early so I can head out to White Sands National Monument to take pictures. This will be a sort of dry run for the trips I want to start making over the next year or so to. Eventually I’d like to get a nice body of work together to do a book.

I’ve never really considered myself to be a landscape photographer and I’m not sure this will change that.  I’m less concerned with the landscapes themselves and more interested in the sense of space in these big open places. It’s an idea I’ve been mulling over for awhile. I started to think about it more seriously after the E5 show I was in last year at Transformer Gallery. Living in the city, while I love it, has really made me miss the Midwest landscape and that big open spaces. I think the main thing I’d like to communicate is that feeling of standing in the “middle of nowhere”. Again less about the specific place and more about the experience. I made some images purely in the computer that were not photographs really, but definately photographic. They were interesting and I think are worth pursuing, but ultimately the expericence of being there is pretty important to me.

So basically I want to take these trips to big empty places and document the trip and process as well as make pictures. That’s the simplest way of putting it I guess. I get in today at 10:00am mountain time to El Paso,TX, then driving to Las Cruces, NM. Hope to get out to White Sands this evening and again tomorrow morning. Points in between on the way. Then head over to Deming for the wedding on Sat. Heading home Sunday evening. I’m going to try to do regular posts with images. Process and document pictures here and final images on my main portfolio site. If you dig, let me know. I’ll send out updates via Twitter when I post stuff. First order of business after I pick up the car is going to be finding a photo store to get a tripod which I just realized I forgot. I’m a total professional.
