It’s just snow, not the End of Days

By Blog No Comments

So originally I was skeptical that we would actually get all the snow that everyone was saying we would get. Turns out we did and in fact still are getting pummeled. It’s a lot of freakin’ snow. However, it’s still just snow. Why does everyone freak out so much around here? I was talking to a couple people at work who also grew up in places that got big snow storms and we don’t get it. It’s not the end of the world. I took some other pictures this afternoon and I plan to head out tomorrow to take some more. I’ll post them later. Stay safe and quit freaking out DC.

A fire on our block

By Blog No Comments

Last night while I was walking Mimi we turned the corner at the end on the block and I heard that snapping and popping sound of something burning. Then I saw the smoke and flames shooting out if the second floor window of the apartment building on the corner. I called 911 and the firefighters showed up in like 2 min. I took Mimi back home a grabbed my camera to go back out and take some pictures. Fires are scary. Read More

Seventeen Photographs…now in two sizes.

By Blog No Comments

This morning I published a book of my photographs on Blurb. I went all out and did the biggest one, so as a result they ended up being kind of expensive. I decided to do another one in a smaller, more economical size. It should be up on their bookstore tonight or tomorrow morning. To encourage those who are thinking about going for the big version, I will offer a signed 8.5×11 print of the photo of your choice from the book to the first 10 orders. E-mail me if you order the large book and let me know which image you’d like. I’ll print it and send it your way once I confirm your order with Blurb. A book and a print for around $80…you can’t beat that.

Jesus Lizard

By Blog

Met up with a few friends on Thursday to see the Jesus Lizard. I was kinda pissed when I got my ticket as it cost $35. $25 for the show and $10 in “extra fees”. However they lived up to my expectations and if i had the chance to see them again for more I might pay it. After seeing them the in mid 90’s my bar was set high and it seems the only thing that has changed is their age. I mean that in a good way. The energy and intensity is still there. Halfway into the first song and David Yow was already in the crowd. The shirt and pants stayed on though.

The best SLR ever.

By Blog

My very first camera was given to me by my parents before we went to Disney World in 1985. It was one of those Kodak instant cameras. After having it for a couple of months, Kodak lost a lawsuit with Polaroid and had to stop producing them and the film they used. I was crushed. Later, in high school when I started to get really into taking pictures, they gave me a Pentax K1000 with a 28-80mm zoom. It was my first SLR and “real” camera. I loved it and it served my well for about 4 or 5 years. I still have it in a box somewhere actually.

Last weekend was the Transformer Gallery auction. It was the best one I’ve been involved in. The space was amazing at the Mexican Cultural Center on 16th. My peice sold. Didn’t write about until now because I wanted to make sure it was definately going to happen. Looks like it did. I have no idea who bought it, but thanks. It’s nice to know someone likes what you do. I also have a couple of pictures that are part of a larger piece that is being installed in a new restaurant called The Passenger. It opens next week, but I’ve been told there is a private preview tomorrow. Going to try to go and check it out. The image included in this post is one of the ones they used. Jayme McLellen and Bridget Sue Lambert are the other photographers who are part of the piece. Bridget and Kristina Bilonick set the thing up and made it happens so big thanks to them.

“That little ole lonely elevator girl…”

By Blog

I don’t keep it a secret that Robert Frank is a hero of mine. The photo from The Americans of the elevator girl has been a favorite picture of his. I came across this story this morning. It’s really great. I alway love hearing the back story on photographs. Sometimes it makes them better, sometime it totally ruins them, but it always make you look at the image differently. This one makes it better I think. Read More

Always have a camera

By Blog No Comments

I’ve been researching online photo magazines lately and I came across Burn a couple of months ago. It’s really inspiring. I’m totally not the photojournalist type. With a few exceptions, most of the ones that I have met have been “that jerk pushing people sticking a camera in everyone’s face” kind of person. To be fair sometimes that’s what it takes to get the shot, and getting the shot is sort of their job. Still, it just puts me off. On the other hand I wish I could be a little less shy about taking pictures of people in public. Clearly you can do it without being a jerk. There is a medium.
